Many parents never make the connection between what their children eat and their behavior. However, what you put into your body ,and theirs, has a lot to do with their behavior. As one person put it, “garbage in, garbage out,” meaning that food that would be considered garbage – fried foods, fast food, and genetically modified foods – are eventually going to have ill effects. Genetically modified foods or GMO’s were introduced into the food supply in the United States in the early 1990’s, bringing with them new illnesses and disorders for adults and children alike.
A disorder identified in 2012 affects children. It’s called pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome or PANS. I would bet good money that this is due to a combination of GMO foods, gluten, and high fructose corn syrup. This mysterious brain disorder is thought to be caused by an infection or other trigger that produces an autoimmune response in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the brain. This results in swelling of the brain, obsessive-compulsive disorder, cognitive regression, sleeplessness, and other disabling behaviors. One physician, Dr. Jenny Frankovich, a rheumatologist at Lucile Packard at Stanford stated “This is not a psychiatric problem. It’s a medical problem.” Personally, I don’t see how you can separate the two. Any disorder involving the brain seems like it would be both a medical and a psychiatric problem, but that’s just my opinion. PANS is currently being treated as an autoimmune disorder with steroids, other anti-inflammatories and immunosuppressants. I’m sure the pharmaceutical industry just loves this. The problem with suppressing the immune system is that it leaves the body vulnerable to fatal infections, Frankovich warned. In addition, this doesn’t cure the disorder, it just covers up the symptoms, like putting a bandaid over a gunshot wound.
It makes sense that this new disorder would occur in children based on the timeline. GMO’s were developed in the early 1990’s. Genetically modified corn and soy were introduced into the U.S. food market in 1996. The children in the news article that discussed PANS were 16 and 20, both born about the same time as GMO’s. So, their bodies have been exposed to GMO food for their complete existence. In addition, another food that has become genetically engineered – gluten, causes the immune system to produce harmful cytokines, which attack the brain. A third food, if you can call it that, is high fructose corn syrup; it contains the heavy metal mercury, which can cause irreversible brain damage. It’s also made from corn, which is no longer even classified as a food; it’s classified as an insecticide because it contains Glyphosate, the primary ingredient in the herbicide, Roundup. Therefore, since the brain does not become fully developed until approximately age 25, it makes sense that these genetically engineered foods would pose more of a threat to brains that are still growing. It is also unfortunate that most infant formulas, unless organic, use GMO ingredients. My recommendation to the parents of these, and all children, would be to put their kids on an organic, non-GMO diet and avoid high fructose corn syrup like the plague.
