Earthing is a term coined by researcher Clinton Ober that refers to connecting ourselves to the surface of Mother Earth by sitting, standing, or walking barefoot on the earth.  This is also accomplished by sleeping on special conductive sheets and pads connected to a simple metal rod inserted into the earth outside a bedroom window in order to ground us to the earth’s energy. This may sound a little far-fetched but proponents of earthing report “Earthing restores and maintains the human body’s most natural electrical state, which in turn promotes optimum health and functionality in daily life. Earthing fans report the following health benefits:

  • decreased chronic pain
  • improved sleep
  • increased energy
  • decreased stress and anxiety


It is reported that as a result of our electronic revolution we are generating unnatural electromagnetic fields (EMF’s), considered “electropollution.”  These unnatural EMF’s are generated everywhere from the electronic devices in offices, wiring in walls, and numerous appliances in our homes. Since human bodies are a mass of bioelectrical energy, these unnatural EMF’s represent a loss of electrical energy in the form of free electrons.  As a consequence of this energy loss, many people experience headaches, arthritic pain, insomnia, chest discomfort, irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias), anxiety and depression.  

Concurrently, our disconnection with the earth has caused a deficiency in the planet’s natural flow of surface electrical energy into our bodies.  It is surmised that the earth has the ability to infuse electrical energy into human beings thus, replenishing our bodies with free electrons.  The reason we are considered to be disconnected from the earth is that our bodies rarely touch the earth’s surface. Our shoes of mostly man-made materials don’t allow electrical conductivity or the passage of free electrons up into our bodies.  The researchers of Earthing argue that since our bodies are made of the same components as the earth, namely minerals and mostly water, we need to be physically in touch with the earth in order to replenish the energy lost from our lack of grounding. Even the bible states from the earth we came and to the earth we shall return. (Ecclesiastes 12:7)  The Cayce readings agree with this as emphasized in the following excerpt: For within the human body – living, not dead –  living human forces –  we find every element, every gas, every mineral, every influence that is outside of the organism itself.  For indeed it is one with the whole. (reading 470-22)  

Walk Your Way to Better Health

The remedy for this is to spend  more time walking barefoot outside or to use a grounding device inside.  According to James L. Oschman, PhD, author of Energy Medicine: The Scientific Basis, “The primordial natural energy emanating from the Earth is the ultimate anti-inflammatory and the ultimate anti-aging medicine.”  Inflammation is thought to contribute to dozens of chronic illnesses.  In addition, numerous studies indicate that chronic inflammation has a direct link to cancer and also many autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes.  As with all new research, there will likely be skeptics arguing against the effects of Earthing however, spending a little more time at the beach or walking barefoot in the park can’t hurt, can it?
