The Gerson Diet
Developed in the 1920s by Dr. Max Gerson, this is a safe, natural treatment using a vegetarian diet of organic foods, raw fruit and vegetable juices to provide foods high in enzymes, and coffee enemas to detoxify the body, thereby activating the body’s natural healing ability.

When it comes to cancer treatment, Gerson and other medical pioneers share the following beliefs:
- “Cancer is a disease of the whole organism, with the tumour being only a symptom and not the disease itself.”
- Cancer can only occur when the immune system is not able to function at its best due to a combination of poor digestion, a liver overrun with toxins, environmental pollution, stress, and a destructive lifestyle, resulting in a toxic, depleted individual.
- Therefore, the primary goal of cancer treatment is to detoxify the system, rebuild the body’s defenses, and restore the vitality, thus enabling the body to heal itself.
Gerson believed only in using organic produce and maintained the view that the poisoned soil was detrimental to health and contributed to degenerative diseases. “The harmful effects of pesticides on the liver, the pancreas, and other vital organs are well known, so is the possible carcinogenity of at least forty-nine pesticides, and of the nitrate-nitrite-nitrosamine chain of chemical developments. Thus it makes sense to switch the cancer patient’s diet to food that is free of harmful substances.”
