Almonds and Cancer
Considered a tree nut, the almond is actually the seed of the fruit produced by the almond tree. This amazing little seed contains several nutrients, including calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, riboflavin (vitamin B2), silicon, tryptophan, and vitamin E. It’s considered a blood-building food and has an amazing amount of health benefits including:
- it’s high in monounsaturated (healthy) fats
- it lowers the risk of heart disease
- it decreases cholesterol levels
- it helps stabilize blood sugar levels making it beneficial for diabetics
- almond flour is gluten-free and may be used as an alternative to wheat flour
- raw almonds and raw almond butter contain live enzymes to aid digestion.
The following are excerpts from the Cayce readings regarding the health benefits of almonds:
“The almond carries more phosphorus AND iron in a combination easily assimilated than any other nut.”
Cayce reading recommend almonds as a source of calcium, as an alternative to milk.
“Those who would eat two to three almonds each day need never fear cancer.”
In the days of Edgar Cayce, almonds, particularly raw almonds were recommended as a healthful food that if taken daily, had the potential to prevent cancer. I think Cayce would be quite astounded and disappointed to find that in the twenty first century, the almond that was touted as a health-food,now has the potential to cause 癌. The reason for this is that in 2007, a batch of raw almonds were reported to be contaminated with salmonella. A second outbreak of salmonella a short time later prompted government officials to convene, thus producing a new law to prevent further outbreaks of salmonella. This law, often referred to as the Almond Law or the Salmonella Law, mandated that all almonds be either pasteurized, a steam treatment designed to destroy enzymes, or be chemically treated with propylene oxide (PPO), a known carcinogen. This law has virtually destroyed the California almond industry, where most almonds are grown. Pasteurizing almonds renders them as no longer raw and the other option renders them a carcinogenic food. Thus, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has essentially destroyed the raw almond market, a move that many conspiracy theorists would deem intentional.
As much as I like to support U.S. products, in this case, I can’t. I have however, found a delicious organic, raw almond butter made in the U.K. called Carley’s. I know you’ll love it!
