Healthy Tip #2 – Eat small, frequent meals. Many people think that the best way to lose weight is to skip meals. This, actually, has the opposite effect. Skipping meals makes the body think that you’re trying to starve it, so it goes into a starvation mode, decreasing your metabolism in order to preserve your brain and body.
Eating small, frequent meals increases your metabolism so you burn calories faster. It’s what I like to refer to as grazing. I’ll use a work-day as an example of what I tend to eat as an example.
- Breakfast smoothie
- Protein or snack bar
- Pear & yogurt
- Roasted chicken, steamed broccoli, and sweet potatoes
- Nuts & dried fruit mix
- Herbal tea
As you can see, I usually eat 5 or 6 mini meals. I don’t go hungry because I’m always munching on something. This meal plan looks a little too perfect, even for me! Let’s look at another day in which I incorporated a comfort food. My two favorite comfort foods are mac and cheese and pizza. Neither of these are super healthy foods but I think it’s important not to deprive yourself; this only leads to binge eating. Here’s what I may eat on a weekend day when I’m off work.
- Egg scramble & toast with organic raspberry preserves (egg scrambles are my favorite-saute your favorite veggies, add eggs, cook, then add your favorite cheese-see Tarifler for details)
- Veggie Soup
- Herbal tea
- Pizza (I love veggie pizzas from Trader Joes. The reason, is that many of their pizzas are imported from Italy, which makes them non-GMO because Europe has banned GMO’s. This lets you enjoy your pizza without guilt)
- Fresh pineapple
- Cheese flavored mini rice cakes (this may not sound appealing but they’re really great! I’ve discovered organic/non-GMO white cheddar rice cakes, which are totally addicting. They’re made from rice and corn, which is one of the worst GMO’s because corn contains a chemical called Glyphosate, which is the primary chemical in the herbicide/pesticide called Roundup. Seriously. Corn, according to the US Dept of Agriculture, is no longer classified as a food; it’s considered an herbicide. That’s why it’s important to look for non-GMO foods.) Anyway, these make an awesome snack; even if you eat the whole bag, they’re so low in calories, they’re guilt free.
